Beckett and Vice seeks to gather scholars, critics, and students from around the world to discuss the theme of "vice" in Beckett's work. I want to open that term up to interpretation. For example, I would like to see papers on vice as a moral and ethical term, but also papers on vice as in "second-in-line." Talk about religion in Beckett, or images of decadence and hedonism. Discuss the opposite of vice, whatever that might be.
Southern California is a beautiful and appropriate destination for Beckett and Vice. I spent many years in the region and appreciate all it has to offer. Over the course of three days, Beckett and Vice participants will engage in conversation about vice both formally and informally. Presenters will deliver papers on the theme, but we will also have the opportunity to talk at a chocolate social, a dinner, and a winery in the Temecula wine region. Imagine relaxing at a winery and contemplating the work of this most important writer.
As the organizer of Beckett and Vice, my goal is to stimulate research. My plan is for Beckett and Vice to be a new and invigorating step into the Beckett world--for both me and my fellow Beckettians around the globe. I completed my graduate work at Florida State University under the direction of S. E. Gontarski, who has graciously agreed to be the keynote speaker. A one-time associate editor for the Journal of Beckett Studies, I now teach English at Assumption College in Worcester, Ma., where I have incorporated Beckett into many of my courses.
I invite veteran scholars, as well as students, to join me in San Diego County in February. "What an addition to company that would be!"
